Worth your hours in Mumbai
- The Gateway of India and the Colaba waterfront are the classic stop, though they sit a long way south of the airport — with traffic this needs a genuinely long connection rather than a hopeful one.
- Bandra is much closer to the airport and gives you Mumbai without the full southbound commitment: the sea-facing promenades, Bandstand, and a dense stretch of food that rewards a couple of hours.
- If your window is marginal, do not attempt the city. Mumbai punishes optimistic travel times more than almost any airport on this site, and the airport itself is a better place to spend four hours than a taxi is.
Staying airside instead
- Terminal 2 is genuinely good — the Jaya He museum installation running through the terminal is one of the more ambitious pieces of airport architecture anywhere, with thousands of artworks integrated into the walls of the concourse. It is worth walking even on a short connection.
- The airside food and retail in T2 are strong by any standard, and the terminal handles overnight traffic well, which matters because Mumbai's long-haul schedule is heavily weighted to the small hours.
- T1 is a functional domestic terminal and nothing more. If your connection leaves you waiting there, expectations should be lower.
Sleeping, showers and lounges at BOM
