Connections at BOS: the honest numbers
The indicative minimum international-to-international connection at Boston Logan is 90 minutes on a single booking with bags checked through. On separate tickets, add roughly 90 minutes: you'll collect bags, recheck them, and re-clear security — and no airline is obliged to help if the first leg runs late.
Transfer specifics
- The United States runs no sterile international transit. Every arriving passenger clears Customs and Border Protection even when only connecting, so you formally enter the country for a two-hour layover. Visa Waiver Program nationals need an approved ESTA; everyone else needs a C-1 transit visa or a valid B visitor visa. After CBP you collect your checked bags, drop them at the recheck belt and clear security again.
- Boston runs four terminals — A, B, C and E. Terminal E is the primary international terminal, and almost all international arrivals clear CBP there, though international departures can leave from any terminal. Some flights pre-clear US customs at their origin, which changes the picture entirely if yours is one of them.
- The trap is Terminal A. Massport states plainly that Terminal A is not connected to the other terminals post-security — passengers arriving there must connect pre-security, using the pedestrian walkways or the free on-airport shuttle, and then clear security again. Terminals B, C and E are better linked: there is a secure walkway between C and E for eligible domestic-to-international connections, though not for passengers arriving from abroad, who must clear customs first.
- The free Massport shuttle runs between all terminals every five to six minutes, and walking is possible via the Skywalk Bridge — about five minutes from Terminal A to Terminal E. One more thing worth knowing: post-security areas close nightly after the last scheduled departure, while pre-security areas stay open 24 hours.
Leaving BOS during a layover
You clear immigration on arrival regardless, so leaving is a question of time rather than permission — but only once you hold the ESTA or visa that let you board. Boston is unusually easy to reach: downtown is about three miles away, and the Silver Line SL1 bus is free from the airport to South Station in roughly 20 minutes. Five hours is a workable floor, which is lower than most US airports on this site. The city is about 25 minutes away one-way; as a rule of thumb you want 5+ hours before exiting is worth the queues, and you should be back through security 90 minutes before boarding.
Worth your hours in Boston
- The Freedom Trail starting at Boston Common is the obvious use of a layover, and the Silver Line drops you at South Station within walking distance of the southern end.
- The North End is closer to the airport side of the water and gives you the best food in the city in a compact walkable grid — a strong option for a shorter window.
- The Boston Water Taxi from the dock near Terminal A reaches Rowes Wharf in about 12 minutes, which is the most enjoyable way in if the weather is good and you do not mind the fare.
Staying airside instead
- Terminal E carries the international lounges — Delta One, British Airways Galleries, Lufthansa, Emirates, Virgin Atlantic's Clubhouse and an independent option — plus the widest duty-free. It is the best terminal to wait in if your connection allows.
- Logan is compact for a major US airport, covering the second-smallest footprint of the twenty busiest, which keeps walks short once you are in the right building.
- European departures cluster in the early evening, so Terminal E is busiest then. If you are connecting through that window, add margin.
Sleeping, showers and lounges at BOS
Sleep: There is no airside transit hotel, and post-security areas close overnight after the last departure, so an overnight connection means going landside. Hotels sit close to the airport and downtown is three miles away, and since you have cleared immigration on arrival regardless, using either is uncomplicated. Airport hotels & sleep pods
Showers: Showers run through the lounges rather than as a walk-up facility, so access depends on your ticket or a lounge pass. Terminal E has the best of them.
Lounges: Terminal E is where the international lounges are concentrated. Because Terminal A does not connect airside to the others, choose a lounge in the terminal you are actually departing from rather than assuming you can reach it. Book an airport lounge for your layover
Dietary needs: US law names nine allergens but the listed one is wheat, not gluten — barley and rye carry no warning. Restaurants aren't covered the way EU ones are. Terminal E has the widest choice if you can reach it.
Overnight reality: Post-security areas close nightly after the last scheduled departure, so waiting airside overnight is not an option at Logan. Pre-security areas stay open 24 hours but are not comfortable. With downtown three miles away and the Silver Line free inbound, a hotel is the sensible answer.
BOS layover FAQ
Do I need a visa to connect through Boston?
Yes — some form of authorisation. The US has no sterile international transit, so every arriving international passenger clears CBP even on a short connection. Visa Waiver Program nationals need an approved ESTA; everyone else needs a C-1 transit visa or valid B visa. You also collect and recheck your bags. Note that some flights pre-clear US customs at their origin, which changes the process.
Can I connect airside between terminals at Boston Logan?
Only partly. Massport states that Terminal A is not connected to the other terminals post-security, so arriving there means connecting pre-security via walkways or the free shuttle and clearing security again. There is a secure walkway between Terminals C and E for eligible domestic-to-international connections, but not for passengers arriving from abroad, who must clear customs first.
Which terminal is international at Boston Logan?
Terminal E is the primary international terminal and handles almost all international arrivals and CBP processing. International departures, however, can leave from any of the four terminals, so check your specific flight rather than assuming.
How do I get from Boston Logan to downtown?
The Silver Line SL1 bus is free from the airport to South Station and takes about 20 minutes — note it is only free inbound, not on the return. Downtown is roughly three miles away, and a taxi takes 15 to 25 minutes via the Ted Williams Tunnel outside peak traffic.
