Connections at HAN: the honest numbers

The indicative minimum international-to-international connection at Hanoi Noi Bai is 90 minutes on a single booking with bags checked through. On separate tickets, add roughly 90 minutes: you'll collect bags, recheck them, and re-clear security — and no airline is obliged to help if the first leg runs late.

Transfer specifics

Noi Bai splits cleanly: Terminal 2 handles all international arrivals and departures, Terminal 1 handles all domestic flights. T2 opened in 2015 and is the newer, larger building with most of the airport's facilities. An international-to-international connection stays inside T2 and is straightforward.
The two terminals are separate buildings under a kilometre apart with no walkway between them. A free electric shuttle bus runs roughly every 15 to 20 minutes through the day and most of the night, picking up on the ground floor near wing A at T1 and at the arrivals level at T2. The ride is only a few minutes, but the transfer as a whole is not — international-to-domestic means immigration, baggage reclaim, customs, the shuttle, then check-in and security again. Allow two to three hours, not the ninety minutes the distance suggests.
Vietnam's entry rules split hard by passport, and this is where a Hanoi layover is decided. UK, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Korean and a growing list of European passports get 45-day visa-free entry. US, Australian, Canadian, New Zealand and Indian passports need an e-visa — around US$25 through the official evisa.gov.vn portal, taking three to seven working days. There is no way to arrange that on arrival, so a spontaneous exit is impossible for those nationalities.
Staying airside in the international transit zone under 24 hours needs no visa. But note that self-transfers on separate tickets, or any itinerary requiring you to collect and recheck bags, force you through immigration — which needs the visa sorted in advance. Vietnam's Digital Arrival Card may also apply. It is a free declaration at prearrival.immigration.gov.vn — never a third-party site charging a fee — submitted within 72 hours of arrival, and it does not replace a visa. It has been mandatory at Ho Chi Minh City since 15 April 2026 and at Phu Quoc since 1 June. Whether it yet applies at Noi Bai is genuinely unclear: reporting from the same week in August 2026 says both that Hanoi has been added and that it has not. Check the official portal for your entry point before flying, and if in doubt just submit it — it is free and takes minutes. Pure transit passengers who never clear immigration are exempt either way.

Leaving HAN during a layover

Vietnam's exit rules split hard by passport. UK, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Korean and a growing list of European passports get 45-day visa-free entry, so leaving is simple. US, Australian, Canadian, New Zealand and Indian passports need an e-visa arranged days in advance through evisa.gov.vn — without one, you stay airside. The other constraint is distance: central Hanoi is 25 to 35 kilometres north of the airport via the Nhat Tan Bridge, about 40 to 60 minutes each way depending on traffic, so six hours is the realistic floor. The city is about 50 minutes away one-way; as a rule of thumb you want 6+ hours before exiting is worth the queues, and you should be back through security 90 minutes before boarding.

Worth your hours in Hanoi

The Old Quarter around Hoan Kiem Lake is the obvious target — dense, walkable, and the best use of a few hours once you have made the trip in from the airport.
The Temple of Literature and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex sit close together in the Ba Dinh district, which makes them an efficient pairing if you want something more structured than wandering.
Be honest about the road time. At 25 to 35 kilometres each way with variable traffic, a six-hour connection gives you perhaps two and a half hours on the ground. Under that, do not attempt it.

Staying airside instead

Terminal 2 is modern and comfortable, with the wider range of shops, restaurants, lounges and currency exchange. It handles a lot of overnight traffic and is a reasonable place to wait.
The airport operates 24 hours, though some services close late at night. Signage is clear in both Vietnamese and English throughout.
Buy a local SIM on arrival if you are leaving the airport — ride-hailing apps like Grab are the practical way into the city, and they need data to work.

Sleeping, showers and lounges at HAN

Sleep: This is Noi Bai's quiet advantage: there are sleeping pods in both terminals — the second floor of Terminal 2 and the upper floor of Terminal 1. They are compact private cabins with a bed, air conditioning, wifi and water, though without private bathrooms, and they sit before security, which makes them suited to long layovers and early departures. Showers: Shower access runs through the lounges rather than as a general walk-up facility. The sleeping pods are the more reliable option for a long overnight wait, since they do not depend on airline status.
