Connections at MCT: the honest numbers
The indicative minimum international-to-international connection at Muscat is 60 minutes on a single booking with bags checked through. On separate tickets, add roughly 90 minutes: you'll collect bags, recheck them, and re-clear security — and no airline is obliged to help if the first leg runs late.
Transfer specifics
- Muscat is a single-terminal airport and connections through it are simple. Transferring passengers are routed to a dedicated transfer area with counters for anyone who did not receive an onward boarding pass at their origin, then through a security re-screening, and then up to the departure level or into the duty-free area — which the airport has explicitly designed for passengers with long transfer times.
- The rule that shapes a Muscat layover is Oman's, not the airport's. Muscat International states that entry to Oman during a transit is permitted only if you have at least six hours. Below that, you stay airside — and if you stay airside without passing immigration, you need no visa at all.
- If you do want to leave, there is a transit visa valid for up to 72 hours. The detail almost every guide omits is who applies for it: under the Omani government's own airport transit visa service, the applicant must be the airline company, not the passenger. So this is a conversation with your carrier in advance, not something you arrange yourself online the night before. A passport with at least six months' validity is required.
- Separately from transit, most nationalities need a visa to enter Oman generally, obtained through the Royal Oman Police eVisa system, with visa-on-arrival available to some nationalities and GCC citizens exempt on a national ID card. If your plan is to leave the airport, resolve which of these applies to you before you fly rather than at the immigration desk.
Leaving MCT during a layover
Everyone else needs either an eVisa arranged in advance through the Royal Oman Police, a visa on arrival if their nationality qualifies, or the 72-hour airport transit visa applied for by their airline. And regardless of paperwork, Oman requires a minimum six-hour connection before it will let a transit passenger enter at all. Under six hours the decision is made for you: stay airside, and you need nothing. The city is about 25 minutes away one-way; as a rule of thumb you want 6+ hours before exiting is worth the queues, and you should be back through security 90 minutes before boarding.
Worth your hours in Muscat
- The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is the obvious target at around 12 kilometres from the airport, and it is genuinely worth the trip — but check the hours before committing, because non-Muslim visitors are admitted only in a narrow morning window, roughly 8am to 11am, Saturday to Thursday. A perfect afternoon layover gets you a closed door.
- Muttrah Souq on the corniche is the better option outside those hours: a traditional covered market of perfume, silver and handicrafts, and a walkable stretch of waterfront alongside it.
- If the window is tight or the heat is severe, Oman Avenues Mall sits close to the airport and works as a low-risk way to be somewhere other than the terminal without gambling on traffic.
Staying airside instead
- Muscat International is a genuinely pleasant modern terminal and considerably calmer than the big Gulf hubs, with a duty-free area designed around long transfers rather than rushed ones.
- Food runs from local options to international chains across the departure levels, and there is a play area for families. It is comfortable for a six-hour wait in a way that many single-terminal airports are not.
- Oman is more relaxed than Saudi Arabia but still conservative — modest dress is appropriate landside, and the airport is not the place to test that.
Sleeping, showers and lounges at MCT
Sleep: There are hotels within the airport precinct and close by landside, but reaching any of them means clearing immigration — which brings the six-hour rule and the visa question into play. Showers: Shower access is through the lounges rather than as a general walk-up facility, so it depends on your ticket or a lounge pass.

Overnight reality: Muscat handles a lot of overnight connecting traffic on Oman Air's network, and the six-hour rule means most overnight layovers do qualify for entry — so the question becomes whether the visa is arranged. Sort that with your airline when you book, because arriving at 2am to discover you cannot leave and cannot check into the hotel you booked is the worst version of this.
