Connections at MNL: the honest numbers

The indicative minimum international-to-international connection at Manila Ninoy Aquino is 120 minutes on a single booking with bags checked through. On separate tickets, add roughly 90 minutes: you'll collect bags, recheck them, and re-clear security — and no airline is obliged to help if the first leg runs late.

Leaving MNL during a layover

The Philippines grants 30-day visa-free entry to most passports including Australian, NZ, UK, US, most EU and ASEAN — immigration itself is the easy part. The hard part is Manila traffic: the city is only ~7 km away, but 20–30 minutes off-peak becomes an hour-plus in gridlock. From T3, the smarter exit is on foot — the Runway Manila footbridge reaches Newport City's hotels, casinos and restaurants without touching a road. A government-backed free transit tour of historic Manila launched in January 2026 for long-layover passengers — ask at the terminal or check ahead. The city is about 30 minutes away one-way; as a rule of thumb you want 6+ hours before exiting is worth the queues, and you should be back through security 90 minutes before boarding.

Worth your hours in Manila

Staying airside instead

Sleeping, showers and lounges at MNL

Sleep: Wings Transit Lounge in T3 (capsules, twin rooms, showers, 24h) is the standout; Newport City hotels across the footbridge sell day rooms. Free terminal sleeping is metal seating and not recommended. Airport hotels & sleep pods

Showers: Wings Transit Lounge and some pay-in lounges; Newport City hotels otherwise.

Lounges: Terminal-dependent and patchy — decent pay-in options in T3, sparse in T1/T2. Verify your terminal before counting on Priority Pass. Priority Pass membership (frequent flyers)

Overnight reality: Landside stays open but some airside areas and checkpoints close overnight, and entry can be restricted until a few hours before departure. Book the Wings lounge or a Newport City room rather than gambling on seating.

MNL layover FAQ

Is 2 hours enough to connect in Manila?

Same terminal on one booking, yes with discipline. Different terminals: no — NAIA's four terminals have no airside link, so you'll clear immigration, collect bags, ride a shuttle or Grab through traffic and check in again. Self-transfers across terminals want 4–5 hours.

Can I leave Manila airport during a layover?

Yes — most passports get 30-day visa-free entry, and the city is close. The risk isn't immigration, it's traffic: budget double the map estimate at peak hours. From T3, Newport City is a footbridge walk with no traffic risk at all.

Where can I sleep at Manila airport?

The Wings Transit Lounge in Terminal 3 (open 24h) rents sleep capsules from about PHP 900 plus twin rooms with showers. Hotels in Newport City, a covered footbridge from T3, sell day rooms. Sleeping on terminal seating is metal-armrest misery and not recommended.

Which NAIA terminal will my flight use?

Check close to travel — airlines were reshuffled across terminals in March 2026 and Terminal 4 has been closed for renovation. Never assume from a past trip: turning up at last year's terminal is the classic MNL mistake, and fixing it means a cross-airport transfer through traffic.
