Connections at PUJ: the honest numbers
The indicative minimum international-to-international connection at Punta Cana is 90 minutes on a single booking with bags checked through. On separate tickets, add roughly 90 minutes: you'll collect bags, recheck them, and re-clear security — and no airline is obliged to help if the first leg runs late.
Transfer specifics
- Punta Cana is the Caribbean's busiest airport and unlike almost anything else on this site — open-air terminals with thatched palm roofs rather than sealed glass boxes. It is a leisure gateway rather than a connecting hub, so most people here are starting or ending a trip rather than passing through.
- The rule worth knowing is the E-Ticket, a mandatory digital form covering immigration, customs and health in one, required of every traveller entering or leaving the Dominican Republic regardless of age or nationality. It replaced the old paper tourist card entirely.
- Transit passengers are exempt. If you are connecting through a Dominican airport and staying in the transit area without clearing immigration, you do not need it. Leave the airport for any reason — even one night — and you do. That is the cleanest version of the airside/landside split anywhere in the Caribbean, and it is worth knowing before you decide whether to go to the beach.
- Two practical traps. The E-Ticket is free at the official portal, eticket.migracion.gob.do, and dozens of third-party sites masquerade as government portals charging US$30 to US$90 to process it — never pay. And the departure side is separate: people complete the arrival form, enjoy their trip, and forget the exit portion, which must be done before you reach the airline counter. Set a reminder for your last day. Screenshot both QR codes, because terminal wifi collapses when three flights land together.
Leaving PUJ during a layover
Citizens of over 100 countries enter visa-free for stays up to 30 days, so leaving the airport is straightforward for most travellers — but you must complete the free E-Ticket first if you cross immigration. Resort strips at Bávaro are 20 to 30 minutes away and most all-inclusives offer transfers. There is no public bus or train from the airport; taxi fares are fixed by zone, so confirm the rate before you get in. The city is about 20 minutes away one-way; as a rule of thumb you want 5+ hours before exiting is worth the queues, and you should be back through security 90 minutes before boarding.
Worth your hours in Punta Cana
- Bávaro Beach is the obvious target at 20 to 30 minutes from the airport, and the reason most people are here in the first place.
- Macao Beach is the wilder, less developed option and a better use of a long layover if you want something other than a resort strip.
- Be realistic about the E-Ticket. If your connection is short, staying airside means no form and no immigration queue — leaving means both, in each direction.
Staying airside instead
- The open-air terminal design is genuinely distinctive — thatched roofs, natural ventilation and tropical planting rather than air conditioning and glass. Pleasant in good weather, humid when it is not.
- Facilities are geared to holiday traffic: duty-free rum and cigars, resort-wear retail and bars, rather than the business amenities you would find at a connecting hub.
- Allow three to four hours for any connection involving customs clearance — queues here vary enormously depending on how many flights land together, and several wide-bodies arriving at once is normal.
Sleeping, showers and lounges at PUJ
Sleep: There is no airside transit hotel. Resort hotels sit 20 to 30 minutes away and most offer transfers, but reaching them means clearing immigration and therefore completing the E-Ticket. For a short overnight connection the terminal is workable but open-air and humid. Airport hotels & sleep pods
Showers: Facilities are limited and shower access is not something to plan around here. On a long connection with an E-Ticket completed, a nearby resort day pass is the realistic answer.
Lounges: There are pay-per-use lounge options including VIP terminal services aimed at leisure travellers. Provision is modest compared with a connecting hub. Book an airport lounge for your layover
Dietary needs: Dominican staples are rice, beans and plantain based, which suits gluten-free eating well. There is no legal right to written allergen information, so ask rather than assume at the resort-style outlets.
Overnight reality: Punta Cana's schedule is built around holiday charters and clusters heavily. Overnight connections are uncommon but do happen, and the open-air terminal is not a comfortable place to spend one. If you can complete the E-Ticket and reach a hotel, do.
PUJ layover FAQ
Do I need the Dominican E-Ticket for a layover?
Only if you leave the airport. If you are connecting through and staying in the transit area without clearing immigration, you are exempt. If you leave for any reason — even a single night — the E-Ticket is mandatory. It covers immigration, customs and health in one digital form and applies to every traveller regardless of age or nationality.
How much does the E-Ticket cost?
Nothing. It is free at the official portal, eticket.migracion.gob.do, and takes about ten minutes. Dozens of third-party sites impersonate government portals and charge US$30 to US$90 to 'process' it. Never pay — if a site is asking for money, it is not the official one.
Do I need a separate E-Ticket to leave the Dominican Republic?
Yes, and this is the most common mistake. The form has arrival and departure sides, and official guidance requires both for commercial flights. Many travellers complete the arrival side, enjoy the trip and forget the exit portion, which must be done before you reach the airline counter at the airport. Set a phone reminder for your last day.
How long do I need for a connection at Punta Cana?
Allow three to four hours for anything involving customs clearance. Queues vary considerably depending on how many flights arrive together, and several wide-bodies landing at once is routine here. A pure airside transit is much faster since you skip immigration entirely.
