Connections at RIX: the honest numbers
The indicative minimum international-to-international connection at Riga is 30 minutes on a single booking with bags checked through. On separate tickets, add roughly 90 minutes: you'll collect bags, recheck them, and re-clear security — and no airline is obliged to help if the first leg runs late.
Transfer specifics
- Riga is the largest airport in the Baltics and airBaltic's hub, handling just over 7 million passengers in 2024 with transit passengers making up more than 20% of the total. It is built for connecting, and it does it better than airports several times its size.
- The minimum transfer time is 30 minutes — the shortest we have found anywhere. The airport's own guidance puts a Schengen-to-non-Schengen transfer at 45 minutes, and airBaltic quotes 40 for the same move. The reason is simply that the passenger terminal is small and compact enough to walk end to end; there is no shuttle, no train and no second building.
- The airside area splits into Pier B for Schengen and Pier C for non-Schengen, with a transit corridor connecting them and border control points positioned along it. Flights between two non-Schengen countries connecting in Riga pass through security but not immigration, so no visa is needed if you stay in the transit area.
- If you do not already have your onward boarding pass, the Transfer Centre sits in the shopping area between gates B and C, open 06:00 to 24:00. The rule from the airport is precise: more than 30 minutes to your next flight, go to the Transfer Centre; less than 30, go straight to the gate and you will be checked in there.
Leaving RIX during a layover
Latvia is in Schengen, so most Western passports enter visa-free for short stays. ETIAS is still NOT required — the EU has dropped its late-2026 target and a 2027 start is now expected, with a revised timeline due after eu-LISA's September 2026 board meeting. The EU's Entry/Exit System is live, so a first entry from outside Schengen means biometrics — budget about an hour for immigration and baggage as a non-Schengen arrival, against 20 to 35 minutes for a Schengen one. The city is only 10 km away and bus 22 costs around €1.50 to €2, which makes even a three-hour layover usable. The city is about 20 minutes away one-way; as a rule of thumb you want 4+ hours before exiting is worth the queues, and you should be back through security 90 minutes before boarding.
Worth your hours in Riga
- Riga's Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and only 20 minutes from the airport — compact, walkable and genuinely worth a three-hour layover, which is not something you can say about many airports.
- The Central Market, housed in five former Zeppelin hangars, is one of the largest markets in Europe and a short walk from the Old Town.
- The Art Nouveau district along Alberta iela has the densest concentration of the style anywhere in the world, and rewards a slightly longer window.
Staying airside instead
- The terminal is a single two-storey building and deliberately compact, which is the whole reason connections here are fast. Outlets include Narvesen and Costa Coffee alongside duty-free.
- Free wifi across landside, airside and the piers with no registration required — a small thing that is surprisingly rare.
- There is a single airport lounge, the airBaltic Business Lounge next to the transfer centre, open 05:00 to 23:00 with hot meals rather than just snacks.
Sleeping, showers and lounges at RIX
Sleep: There is no airside transit hotel, but hotels sit near the airport and the Old Town is 20 minutes away. With Schengen entry visa-free for most Western passports, reaching either is straightforward for an overnight connection. Airport hotels & sleep pods
Showers: Shower access runs through the single Business Lounge rather than as a walk-up facility, so it depends on your ticket or a lounge pass.
Lounges: There is one lounge — the airBaltic Business Lounge, next to the transfer centre, open 05:00 to 23:00, offering beverages, snacks, hot meals and newspapers. Modest provision, but well placed for connecting passengers. Book an airport lounge for your layover
Dietary needs: Latvian food is rye-bread and potato centred, so coeliacs should treat the bread as off-limits and lean on the international outlets. EU law entitles you to written allergen information at counters, gluten included — ask.
Overnight reality: Riga handles a lot of airBaltic connecting traffic but the terminal is small and the lounge closes at 23:00. With the city 20 minutes away and bus 22 running cheaply, going landside is usually the better answer for an overnight wait.
RIX layover FAQ
What is the minimum connection time at Riga airport?
30 minutes, which is the shortest of any airport on this site. For a Schengen to non-Schengen transfer the airport quotes 45 minutes and airBaltic quotes 40. The terminal is small and compact enough to walk end to end, so there is no shuttle or train to factor in.
Do I need a visa to transit through Riga?
Not if you are connecting between two non-Schengen countries and stay in the transit area — you pass through security but not immigration, so no visa is required. If you are entering Schengen or leaving the airport, Latvia's Schengen rules apply and most Western passports enter visa-free for short stays.
What if I don't have my onward boarding pass at Riga?
Go to the Transfer Centre in the shopping area between gates B and C, open 06:00 to 24:00 — but only if you have more than 30 minutes until your next flight. With less than 30 minutes, head straight to your boarding gate and you will be checked in there. Gate numbers are on the terminal monitors.
Is a Riga layover long enough to see the city?
Yes, unusually so. The airport is only 10 km from the centre and bus 22 costs around €1.50 to €2, taking about 20 minutes. Riga's Old Town is a UNESCO site and compact enough that even a three-hour layover gets you a real walk around it.
