Connections at TBS: the honest numbers
The indicative minimum international-to-international connection at Tbilisi is 60 minutes on a single booking with bags checked through. On separate tickets, add roughly 90 minutes: you'll collect bags, recheck them, and re-clear security — and no airline is obliged to help if the first leg runs late.
Transfer specifics
- Tbilisi International is Georgia's main gateway, 17 km from the city centre, with a recently modernised terminal. It sits on the Europe–Asia crossover and has grown as a connecting point between Turkey, the Gulf, Central Asia and Europe.
- The transit rule is clean. If you do not leave the transit zone and hold a single ticket to your final destination, a Georgian transit visa is not required for citizens of most countries — the airport states this directly. Verify your own nationality beforehand, as always, but for most travellers an airside connection needs nothing.
- Note one quirk: passengers transiting via Tbilisi must pass security checks again before heading to the onward boarding gate, even on an airside connection. Build a few extra minutes in for that.
- If you already hold a valid onward boarding card and your bags are checked through, head to the connecting flights transfer counter on the second level of the Departures Terminal. If you do not have that boarding card, or your baggage needs rechecking, you must collect your bags, exit into the arrivals hall through a normal customs exit, and check in again from scratch — which means clearing immigration.
Leaving TBS during a layover
Georgia runs one of the most generous entry regimes anywhere — citizens of a long list of countries including the EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia, Japan and the Gulf states can enter and stay visa-free for a full year, not the usual 90 days. That makes leaving the airport straightforward for most travellers, and Tbilisi's old town is only 17 km away. Confirm your own position on the Georgian foreign ministry site, as the list is long but not universal. If you are combining the Caucasus, note that Azerbaijan next door is far stricter — it needs an ASAN e-Visa for most travellers and requires a transit visa even for land transit, so do not assume Georgia's openness extends across the border. The city is about 25 minutes away one-way; as a rule of thumb you want 5+ hours before exiting is worth the queues, and you should be back through security 90 minutes before boarding.
Worth your hours in Tbilisi
- The Old Town with its sulphur bath district, Narikala Fortress and the cable car up to it is the obvious target — dense, walkable and about 25 minutes from the airport.
- Rustaveli Avenue and the surrounding centre give you the grander 19th-century city and works for a shorter window.
- The Chronicle of Georgia, a monumental set of pillars on a hill north of the city, is the more unusual stop if you have a long layover and a car.
Staying airside instead
- The terminal has been substantially modernised and is comfortable, with duty-free, local Georgian food and wine outlets and quiet corners for working.
- Georgian wine is genuinely one of the world's oldest winemaking traditions rather than a gift-shop gimmick — the duty-free selection is worth a look if you are buying anything.
- Remember the re-screening: transiting passengers pass security again before the onward gate, so do not cut a connection to the published minimum without allowing for it.
Sleeping, showers and lounges at TBS
Sleep: There is no airside transit hotel. Hotels sit near the airport and throughout the city, and with Georgia's visa-free regime covering most Western passports for a full year, reaching either is uncomplicated. Airport hotels & sleep pods
Showers: Shower access runs through the lounges rather than as a walk-up facility, so it depends on airline status or a lounge pass.
Lounges: There are lounge options including pay-per-use access. Provision is modest but the terminal itself is comfortable enough for a moderate wait. Book an airport lounge for your layover
Dietary needs: Georgian food suits restricted diets better than most — lobio (bean stew), badrijani (aubergine) and grilled meats are naturally gluten-free, though khachapuri and khinkali are both wheat. Vegetarian is genuinely easy thanks to Orthodox fasting traditions.
Overnight reality: Tbilisi handles overnight connecting traffic between Europe, Turkey and Central Asia. With the city 25 minutes away and visa-free entry running to a year for most Western passports, a hotel is almost always the better answer than the terminal.
TBS layover FAQ
Do I need a transit visa for Tbilisi?
For most nationalities, no — the airport states that if you do not leave the transit zone and hold a single ticket to your final destination, a Georgian transit visa is not required for citizens of most countries. Verify your own nationality before travelling, but an airside connection generally needs nothing.
How long can I stay in Georgia visa-free?
Up to a full year for citizens of a long list of countries including the EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia, Japan and the Gulf states — which is the most generous visa-free allowance of any country on this site. Most countries cap visa-free stays at 90 days; Georgia does not.
Do I have to clear security again transiting Tbilisi?
Yes. Passengers transiting via Tbilisi International must pass security checks again before heading to the onward boarding gate, even on an airside connection. It is quick but worth building into a tight connection rather than assuming a gate-to-gate walk.
What if my bags aren't checked through at Tbilisi?
Then it is a full re-entry. You must retrieve your baggage, exit into the arrivals hall via a normal customs exit, and check in again at the Departures Terminal — which means clearing immigration. If you do have a valid onward boarding card and through-checked bags, use the connecting flights transfer counter on the second level of Departures instead.
