Leaving VIE during a layover

The EES is fully live since April 2026 — first Schengen entry includes fingerprint and facial registration, and peak-season queues at busy hubs have run to hours this summer, so pad immigration in both directions. The city is about 16 minutes away one-way; as a rule of thumb you want 4.5+ hours before exiting is worth the queues, and you should be back through security 90 minutes before boarding.
Worth your hours in Vienna
- 4.5–6h: CAT to Wien Mitte, 10-minute walk to Stephansdom, one proper coffee house (order a melange), CAT back
- 7h+: add the MuseumsQuartier or the Ringstrasse tram loop for the imperial architecture without walking it
- 9h+: Schönbrunn Palace is doable — U4 from Wien Mitte straight there — but book the palace slot ahead
