The indicative minimum international-to-international connection at Cape Town International is 60 minutes on a single booking with bags checked through. On separate tickets, add roughly 90 minutes: you'll collect bags, recheck them, and re-clear security — and no airline is obliged to help if the first leg runs late.

- Like Johannesburg, Cape Town is on South Africa's transit-visa exemption list: passengers transiting airside through CPT (and OR Tambo, King Shaka and Lanseria) do NOT need a South African transit visa regardless of nationality, though everyone is biometrically captured. Leaving the airport is the separate question and needs the normal entry rules for your passport.

The city is about 25 minutes away one-way; as a rule of thumb you want 5+ hours before exiting is worth the queues, and you should be back through security 90 minutes before boarding.
Worth your hours in Cape Town
- 6h+: Uber to the V&A Waterfront for a safe, walkable harbour district — restaurants, the Two Oceans Aquarium, and Table Mountain views — and straight back
- 7h+: the Table Mountain cableway (weather permitting — the mountain closes in high wind), booked online to skip the queue, is the iconic Cape Town half-day
- 8h+: Boulders Beach penguins at Simon's Town (about 45 minutes) or a quick Cape Peninsula drive with a pre-booked car/driver, watching traffic on the way back

Sleeping, showers and lounges at CPT
Sleep: There are no sleep pods, and CPT is a smaller airport that largely closes down overnight, so it's not ideal for sleeping in the terminal.
