Connections at JNB: the honest numbers

The indicative minimum international-to-international connection at Johannesburg OR Tambo is 60 minutes on a single booking with bags checked through. On separate tickets, add roughly 90 minutes: you'll collect bags, recheck them, and re-clear security — and no airline is obliged to help if the first leg runs late.

Transfer specifics

Terminal A handles all international flights; the B piers are domestic (Airlink and others). International-to-domestic means clearing immigration, collecting your bag and re-checking — but there's a signed international transit route before immigration if your bags are checked through and you're staying airside.
OR Tambo is on the transit-visa exemption list: passengers transiting airside through OR Tambo (and Cape Town, King Shaka, Lanseria) do NOT need a South African transit visa regardless of nationality, though everyone is biometrically captured. Leaving the airport is a different question — that needs the normal entry rules for your passport.

Leaving JNB during a layover

Australian, UK, US, Canadian, Japanese and EU passports enter South Africa visa-free for up to 90 days — but note New Zealand citizens now DO need a visa arranged in advance, a recent change, so Kiwis should not plan on exiting. Airside transit needs no visa for anyone (biometrics only). The Gautrain rapid-rail station is inside the terminal (Level 2, via the domestic check-in area, ~12-minute walk to the platform) and reaches Sandton in about 15 minutes for roughly ZAR 200–250 plus a one-off Gautrain card, running every 10–15 minutes from ~5:30am to ~9pm. It is the only real public-transport option and far safer than improvising — outside the Gautrain corridor, use pre-booked transfers or Uber/Bolt, not street taxis. IMPORTANT for families: South Africa requires children under 18 to carry an unabridged (full) birth certificate, and this can be checked even in transit — travel with it. The city is about 15 minutes away one-way; as a rule of thumb you want 5+ hours before exiting is worth the queues, and you should be back through security 90 minutes before boarding.

Worth your hours in Johannesburg

6h+: Gautrain to Sandton for the safe, walkable financial district — Nelson Mandela Square, malls, restaurants — and straight back
8h+: a guided Soweto or Apartheid Museum tour (pre-booked, door-to-door) is the meaningful Johannesburg half-day
10h+: the Cradle of Humankind or a Lion Park visit are doable with a private driver, but watch traffic back to the airport

Sleep: The standout is the airside Protea by Marriott OR Tambo Transit hotel inside the international terminal — no immigration needed, book ahead for overnight layovers. Landside, the InterContinental is a covered walk from arrivals and there's a City Lodge at the airport. Overnight reality: Long overnight connections are common here because of the evening arrival / morning onward pattern. The airside transit hotel is the civilised answer; if you must stay in the terminal, keep valuables on you and stick to the busier, well-lit airside areas near the lounges.
