The city is about 20 minutes away one-way; as a rule of thumb you want 4+ hours before exiting is worth the queues, and you should be back through security 90 minutes before boarding.
Worth your hours in Kigali
- The Kigali Genocide Memorial is the most significant thing to see and sits close enough to the airport to fit a moderate layover. It is a serious and affecting place rather than a sightseeing stop, and worth the time if you have it.
- The Kimironko Market gives you the working city — produce, fabric and everyday commerce — and is straightforward to reach by taxi from the airport.
- Central Kigali is compact and easy to walk, with hilltop views across the city that make even a short visit feel worthwhile given how close the airport is.
Staying airside instead
- The terminal is small and modern rather than grand, with free wifi, charging points, duty-free, currency exchange, ATMs and a handful of cafes. It is comfortable for a couple of hours and not built for much longer than that.
- Kigali sits at around 1,500 metres, which makes it one of the higher international airports and gives the city a mild climate year-round — pleasant, but worth knowing if you are arriving from sea level and feel briefly short of breath.
- The airport is notably orderly and clean, which is consistent with Kigali generally and makes it an easier place to transit than its size suggests.
Sleeping, showers and lounges at KGL
Sleep: There is no airside transit hotel, but the city is so close that hotels are a practical option even for a moderate overnight connection, and the visa-on-arrival policy means using them is uncomplicated for any nationality.
