Connections at SKP: the honest numbers
The indicative minimum international-to-international connection at Skopje is 60 minutes on a single booking with bags checked through. On separate tickets, add roughly 90 minutes: you'll collect bags, recheck them, and re-clear security — and no airline is obliged to help if the first leg runs late.
Transfer specifics
- Skopje International is North Macedonia's main gateway, about 21 km east of the city near Petrovec, with one passenger terminal housing a modern arrivals and departures hall. A major renovation has improved facilities considerably, and it functions as an entry point for the wider Western Balkans including Kosovo, Albania and Serbia.
- The thing worth knowing, and it is the same point that makes Belgrade useful: North Macedonia is not in Schengen and not in the EU. The EU's Entry/Exit System and ETIAS do not apply here, and days spent in North Macedonia do not count against your Schengen 90/180 allowance. If you are working a long European trip against that limit, a stop here is free time — the same as Serbia.
- North Macedonia runs its own generous regime: it grants 90-day visa-free entry to all Schengen Annex II nationalities with a small number of exceptions, mostly small Pacific and Caribbean states. In practice that covers the EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
- If your nationality does need one, there are three types: an Airport Transit Visa (Type A) for passing through the international zone, a Short-Stay and Transit Visa (Type C) for visits up to 90 days, and a Long-Stay (Type D). The Type A is the one to check if you are simply connecting. Note the airport dropped Alexander the Great from its name in 2018 as part of the settlement with Greece, so older guides and tickets may use the old name.
Leaving SKP during a layover
North Macedonia grants 90 days visa-free to all Schengen Annex II nationalities bar a handful of exceptions, under its own regime entirely separate from Schengen — so your Schengen days are untouched. Euros are widely accepted throughout the country, so there is no urgency to change money on arrival, though ATMs in the arrivals hall dispense denars. The city centre is 21 km away along the E75. The city is about 30 minutes away one-way; as a rule of thumb you want 5+ hours before exiting is worth the queues, and you should be back through security 90 minutes before boarding.
Worth your hours in Skopje
- The Old Bazaar is the most rewarding stop — one of the largest Ottoman-era bazaars in the Balkans, walkable and genuinely atmospheric rather than staged.
- The Stone Bridge and Macedonia Square give you the centre and the striking, much-debated statuary of the Skopje 2014 project in a single walk.
- Matka Canyon is the local escape and about 40 minutes from the centre — a genuinely good option if you have a very long layover, but not a short one.
Staying airside instead
- One terminal with a modern arrivals and departures hall following a major renovation, including duty-free, cafes, currency exchange, ATMs and car rental desks. Wi-Fi runs throughout.
- Security queues lengthen noticeably in July and August — partly holiday traffic, partly the heat, which regularly exceeds 38°C in high summer. Allow extra time in those months.
- Check-in typically opens two to three hours before departure, which matters at an airport where most traffic is low-cost and arrives in clusters.
Sleeping, showers and lounges at SKP
Sleep: There is no airside transit hotel. Hotels sit near the airport and throughout Skopje, and with visa-free entry covering most Western passports, reaching either is straightforward for an overnight connection. Airport hotels & sleep pods
Showers: Facilities are limited and shower access is not something to plan around here. On a long connection a nearby hotel is the realistic answer.
Lounges: There is modest lounge provision in the single terminal following the renovation, including pay-per-use options. Expect a quiet room rather than a full-service facility. Book an airport lounge for your layover
Dietary needs: Macedonian food is bread and meat centred — grilled dishes and ajvar are safe gluten-free options, but burek and the bread are not. North Macedonia is outside the EU, so there is no legal right to written allergen information.
Overnight reality: Skopje handles a lot of low-cost traffic with awkward early and late departures. The terminal is small and quietens overnight, and with visa-free entry for most Western passports and the city 21 km away, a hotel is usually the better answer.
SKP layover FAQ
Does time in North Macedonia count against my Schengen 90/180 limit?
No. North Macedonia is outside Schengen and outside the EU, so days spent there do not count against your Schengen allowance. It runs its own separate 90-day visa-free regime. That makes Skopje useful in the same way Belgrade is for anyone managing a long European trip against the Schengen limit.
Do I need a visa for a Skopje layover?
Most likely not. North Macedonia grants 90-day visa-free entry to all Schengen Annex II nationalities with a handful of exceptions, which covers the EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. If your nationality does need one, an Airport Transit Visa (Type A) covers passing through the international zone and a Type C covers stays up to 90 days.
Do ETIAS or EES apply at Skopje?
Neither. The EU's Entry/Exit System covers Schengen external borders and ETIAS covers Schengen entry — North Macedonia is outside both, so you get a traditional passport stamp and there is no pre-travel authorisation to arrange.
Why do some sources call it Alexander the Great Airport?
That was the airport's name until February 2018, when it was dropped as part of improving relations with Greece. Older guides, and occasionally older booking references, still use it. It is the same airport — Skopje International, IATA code SKP, near Petrovec about 21 km east of the city.
