Connections at BNE: the honest numbers
The indicative minimum international-to-international connection at Brisbane is 60 minutes on a single booking with bags checked through. On separate tickets, add roughly 90 minutes: you'll collect bags, recheck them, and re-clear security — and no airline is obliged to help if the first leg runs late.
Transfer specifics
- International-to-international is the easy case. Brisbane Airport states plainly that connecting between two international flights does not require you to leave the International Terminal, so if your bags are checked through and you have a boarding pass you stay airside and never meet an immigration officer. Confirm with your airline that your bags really are through-checked, because that is the assumption everything else rests on.
- International-to-domestic is a different animal and it is where people miss flights. Brisbane's terminals are physically separate. You must clear immigration, collect your checked bags, pass through customs and biosecurity, exit the terminal, and then travel to the Domestic Terminal by Airtrain or the free transfer bus before checking in again. Allow 90 to 120 minutes for that whole sequence, not the 60-minute connection your booking suggests. The Airtrain terminal transfer costs $5 and takes about five minutes; a free terminal transfer bus also runs.
- Australia's transit rules are stricter than most countries and they are the real constraint here. Transit Without Visa (TWOV) covers about 67 nationalities including the UK, the US, Canada, almost all of Europe, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and the UAE — but only if you arrive by air, hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country departing within 8 hours, and never clear immigration for any reason. Collect a bag, change terminals, or need to check in for the onward flight, and TWOV stops applying. India is not on the TWOV list at all: Indian passport holders need a visa to transit Australia even airside, even for a two-hour connection.
- If TWOV does not cover you, the Transit visa (subclass 771) is free, allows up to 72 hours, and must be arranged before you fly. It is not something you can sort out on arrival.
Leaving BNE during a layover
There is no visa-free way to leave Brisbane Airport. Australia requires a visa or an ETA for every non-citizen, including for a few hours in the city, and TWOV explicitly does not permit leaving the transit area. UK, US, Canadian, Japanese, Singaporean and most EU passport holders can apply online for an ETA or eVisitor cheaply and quickly, and with one of those you can leave freely — but it must be arranged before departure, not on arrival. New Zealand citizens are the exception and can enter under the Trans-Tasman arrangement. If you have not sorted a visa in advance, plan to stay airside. The city is about 20 minutes away one-way; as a rule of thumb you want 4+ hours before exiting is worth the queues, and you should be back through security 90 minutes before boarding.
Worth your hours in Brisbane
- South Bank Parklands is the highest-value short trip — riverside gardens, the man-made Streets Beach lagoon, and the Queensland Museum and Gallery of Modern Art clustered together, all within a few minutes' walk of South Brisbane and South Bank stations on the Airtrain line.
- The Story Bridge and the Howard Smith Wharves precinct underneath it give you the postcard view of the river and the city, plus a row of bars and restaurants, and it is an easy walk or short rideshare from Fortitude Valley station.
- If you only have a couple of hours on the ground, stay in the CBD between Central and Roma Street. The Queen Street Mall, the Botanic Gardens at Gardens Point and a CityCat ferry ride along the river all sit within walking distance of the stations, which keeps your return trip predictable.
Staying airside instead
- The International Terminal is comfortable but compact, and there is no 24-hour landside-free zone: this is not Changi or Doha. Expect duty-free, a decent spread of cafes and restaurants, free Wi-Fi, charging points, art installations, a children's play area and yoga pods.
- One thing to know before you count on it: access to the Brisbane International Lounge moved landside during terminal works and is expected to stay that way until late 2026. Passengers connecting between international flights, who by definition are not entering Australia, cannot reach it the normal way. Qantas directs transit passengers to the International Transfer Desk for current arrangements. If a shower or lounge access is central to your layover plan, ask at that desk on arrival rather than assuming.
- Australian biosecurity is genuinely strict rather than theatrical. If you clear immigration for any reason, declare every food item, plant product, wooden souvenir and anything animal-derived on your Incoming Passenger Card. Fines are severe and inspectors do check.
Sleeping, showers and lounges at BNE
Sleep: There is no airside transit hotel or sleep-pod facility at Brisbane International, which is the single biggest weakness of a long BNE layover. The terminal does not operate 24 hours in the way major Asian and Gulf hubs do, and overnight airside waits are uncomfortable. If you have an overnight connection and a visa that lets you leave, the airport hotels a short shuttle or Airtrain hop away are a much better plan than the concourse. Showers: Shower facilities are tied to the lounges rather than being independently available, which makes them unreliable for transit passengers while lounge access remains landside during the works. Do not build a plan around a shower here without confirming at the International Transfer Desk first.
Lounges: Both terminals have lounges — Qantas Club and the Qantas Business Lounge, Virgin Australia's The Lounge, and pay-per-use options with Priority Pass acceptance at some. The important caveat is the one above: while International Lounge access sits landside during terminal works, international transit passengers cannot use the standard route in. Overnight reality: Brisbane's international schedule is heavily weighted to early morning and late evening, so overnight connections happen. Australia's transit rules make them awkward: TWOV only covers connections under 8 hours, and Brisbane Airport notes that where more than 8 hours separates two international flights, passengers may be required to enter Australia and be accommodated in a designated facility until it is time to return for the onward flight. That is not a hotel of your choosing. If your connection here exceeds 8 hours, arrange an appropriate visa before you fly so that leaving on your own terms is an option.
