Connections at POM: the honest numbers
The indicative minimum international-to-international connection at Port Moresby Jacksons is 90 minutes on a single booking with bags checked through. On separate tickets, add roughly 90 minutes: you'll collect bags, recheck them, and re-clear security — and no airline is obliged to help if the first leg runs late.
Transfer specifics
- Jacksons is Papua New Guinea's main gateway and Air Niugini's hub, about 8 km from Port Moresby. It has two terminals — Domestic and International — linked by a covered walkway. All international airlines use the International Terminal, including Air Niugini's own international routes; the Domestic Terminal handles Air Niugini and PNG Air domestic services.
- The transit rule is simple and worth knowing: provided you stay in the international terminal for your whole connection, you do not need a visa. On leaving the aircraft, follow the transit signage — you pass through a separate security screening and back into the airside waiting area without crossing immigration.
- Crossing to the Domestic Terminal is a different matter. It means clearing immigration, which means holding a visa, and it applies to anyone connecting onto a domestic flight to Lae, Mount Hagen or the islands.
- PNG offers a visa on arrival for nationals of selected countries at Jacksons, at a dedicated counter separate from regular immigration, costing around US$100 or the kina equivalent, with cash and card typically accepted. But the official advice is to use the e-Visa at evisa.gov.pg instead — applying in advance removes the risk of being turned away at the airport. Everyone must complete the Online Arrival Card before entering PNG, regardless of visa type. Passports need six months' validity and you will be asked for an onward ticket and proof of funds.
Leaving POM during a layover
Nobody enters Papua New Guinea visa-free. Selected nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at Jacksons for around US$100, but the government's own advice is to apply for the e-Visa in advance rather than risk being turned away at the counter. Everyone must complete the Online Arrival Card. The city is only 8 km away, but Port Moresby has significant security considerations — arrange transport through your hotel or a known operator rather than hailing something at the kerb. The city is about 20 minutes away one-way; as a rule of thumb you want 6+ hours before exiting is worth the queues, and you should be back through security 90 minutes before boarding.
Worth your hours in Port Moresby
- The Papua New Guinea National Museum and Art Gallery is the most rewarding stop and holds a genuinely significant collection of Melanesian material.
- The Parliament Haus building is architecturally striking and close to the museum, making the two a sensible pairing on a longer layover.
- Be realistic about safety rather than distance. Port Moresby has serious crime issues and independent wandering is not advisable — if you leave the airport, do it with pre-arranged transport and a specific destination.
Staying airside instead
- The International Terminal has four aircraft parking bays, all with aerobridges, and a modest range of facilities appropriate to an airport handling around 1.6 million passengers a year.
- The two terminals are linked by a covered walkway, but that walkway is landside — crossing it means you have cleared immigration.
- Facilities are limited compared with the Asian and Australian hubs most travellers reach POM from. Bring what you need for a long connection rather than assuming you can buy it.
Sleeping, showers and lounges at POM
Sleep: There is no airside transit hotel. Hotels sit in Port Moresby and near the airport, and reaching them means clearing immigration and therefore holding a visa. Given the security situation, book somewhere that provides its own airport transfer rather than arranging transport on arrival. Airport hotels & sleep pods
Showers: Facilities are limited and shower access is not something to plan around here.
Lounges: Air Niugini operates lounge facilities as the home carrier. Provision is modest, in keeping with the terminal's size. Book an airport lounge for your layover
Dietary needs: PNG staples are sweet potato, taro, sago and rice based, which suits gluten-free eating. Airside range is narrow, so bring what you need for a long connection rather than relying on what is open.
Overnight reality: Port Moresby's international schedule is thin and overnight connections do happen. Given the limited airside facilities and the fact that leaving requires a visa arranged in advance, an overnight connection here is worth designing out at booking time if you can.
POM layover FAQ
Do I need a visa to transit through Port Moresby?
Not if you stay in the international terminal for the whole connection. Follow the transit signage on leaving the aircraft — you pass through a separate security screening and back into the airside waiting area without crossing immigration. If your connection is onto a domestic flight, you must clear immigration and therefore need a visa.
How does PNG's visa on arrival work?
Selected nationalities can obtain one at a dedicated counter at Jacksons, separate from regular immigration, for around US$100 or the kina equivalent, with cash and card typically accepted. You will need your passport, return ticket, accommodation proof and a completed arrival card. The official recommendation is to apply for the e-Visa at evisa.gov.pg instead, which removes the risk of being refused at the airport.
What is the PNG Online Arrival Card?
A mandatory declaration everyone must complete before entering Papua New Guinea, regardless of visa type. It is separate from your visa and needs doing before you arrive. Your passport must also have at least six months' validity from the date of arrival, and you may be asked to show an onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds.
Should I leave the airport during a Port Moresby layover?
Only with pre-arranged transport and a specific destination. The city is just 8 km away, but Port Moresby has significant security considerations and independent wandering is not advisable. Arrange a transfer through your hotel or a known operator rather than hailing something at the kerb.
