Connections at NAN: the honest numbers
The indicative minimum international-to-international connection at Nadi is 60 minutes on a single booking with bags checked through. On separate tickets, add roughly 90 minutes: you'll collect bags, recheck them, and re-clear security — and no airline is obliged to help if the first leg runs late.
Transfer specifics
- Nadi is the Pacific's main connecting point, handling around 97% of Fiji's international arrivals and acting as the hub for Fiji Airways' network across the smaller island nations. Everything runs from a single terminal — international and domestic both — so there is no shuttle and no terminal change to plan for. Fiji Airways departs from Concourse A and other carriers from Concourse B.
- The transit rule is where sources genuinely disagree, and it matters. Tourism Fiji, the official tourism body, states that layovers under ten hours can stay in the Nadi transit lounge, and that exceeding ten hours means clearing Immigration and Customs. Several established airport guides instead give the threshold as six hours. We cannot reconcile those, so plan for the shorter figure and confirm with your airline: being told at the gate that you must enter Fiji is a manageable surprise, being unprepared for it is not.
- Crossing that threshold means the full arrival process — immigration, customs and biosecurity. Fiji is an island nation and takes biosecurity seriously, so declare any food, plant material, wooden items or anything animal-derived rather than risking it.
- Most travellers are visa-exempt, including Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, the UK, Japan, China, Singapore and India. You will need proof of an onward ticket, typically within 72 hours, and to meet the entry requirements of your onward destination. If your nationality is not visa-exempt, arrange a transit visa with Fiji Immigration before travelling.
Leaving NAN during a layover
Fiji is visa-exempt for a wide range of nationalities, so leaving the airport is straightforward for most travellers once you have crossed the transit threshold and entered. You will need proof of an onward ticket and to satisfy your next destination's entry rules. The airport is about 10 kilometres from Nadi town, so the trip in is short — the constraint is the arrival process rather than the distance. The city is about 20 minutes away one-way; as a rule of thumb you want 6+ hours before exiting is worth the queues, and you should be back through security 90 minutes before boarding.
Worth your hours in Nadi
- Nadi town is only about 10 kilometres away and the Sri Siva Subramaniya temple at its southern end is the most striking thing within easy reach of the airport.
- Denarau Island, with its resorts, marina and beaches, is a short drive and the standard choice for a few hours — it is manicured rather than authentic, but it is close and easy.
- Wailoaloa Beach sits between the airport and Denarau and works for a genuinely short window, though be realistic: once you have cleared immigration and biosecurity, a six-hour layover leaves less time than the map suggests.
Staying airside instead
- The transit lounge is functional rather than luxurious — duty-free, basic facilities and somewhere to sit. Free wifi is available throughout the terminal but capped at around two hours or 1GB, so do not plan on working through a long connection.
- Expect a liquids, aerosols and gels screening before re-entering certain airside areas, similar to a normal departure screening, even if you never left.
- Because everything runs from one terminal, walking distances are short and a connection here is mechanically simple. The complication is the transit threshold, not the layout.
Sleeping, showers and lounges at NAN
Sleep: There is no airside transit hotel, but several hotels sit close to the airport and the short distance makes them practical once you have entered Fiji. For an overnight connection that crosses the transit threshold anyway, a nearby hotel is clearly better than the terminal. Airport hotels & sleep pods
Showers: Facilities are limited and shower access is not something to plan around here. If you need one on a long connection, a nearby hotel is the realistic answer given how close they are.
Lounges: There are lounges upstairs in the international departures area, including a quiet lounge, with Fiji Airways operating the main facility and pay-per-use options available. Priority Pass membership (frequent flyers)
Overnight reality: Fiji Airways schedules a lot of overnight connections through Nadi to link Australia and New Zealand with North America and the smaller Pacific islands, so long waits are common. Almost any overnight connection will exceed the transit threshold on either reading of it, so expect to clear immigration and plan on a hotel.
NAN layover FAQ
How long can I stay in transit at Nadi Airport without entering Fiji?
Sources disagree, which is unusual and worth knowing. Tourism Fiji states that transits under ten hours can remain in the transit lounge and that exceeding ten hours means clearing Immigration and Customs. Several established airport guides give the limit as six hours instead. Plan around six, and confirm with your airline before you travel.
Do I need a visa for a Fiji layover?
Most travellers are visa-exempt, including Australians, New Zealanders, Britons, Americans, Canadians, Japanese, Chinese, Singaporeans and Indians. You will need proof of an onward ticket, typically within 72 hours, and to meet the entry requirements of your onward destination. If your nationality is not exempt, arrange a transit visa with Fiji Immigration in advance.
Can I store my bags at Nadi Airport?
Yes. There is a guarded luggage storage room just off the Arrivals Hall near the rental car kiosks, open daily from about 5am to 10pm. Fees are charged per item per day and depend on size. That makes a short trip into Nadi or Denarau considerably more practical if you have entered Fiji.
Is Nadi Airport a single terminal?
Yes — international and domestic flights all operate from the same building, so connections need no shuttle and walking distances are short. Fiji Airways uses Concourse A and other airlines use Concourse B.
