Connections at MEL: the honest numbers

The indicative minimum international-to-international connection at Melbourne Tullamarine is 60 minutes on a single booking with bags checked through. On separate tickets, add roughly 90 minutes: you'll collect bags, recheck them, and re-clear security — and no airline is obliged to help if the first leg runs late.

Transfer specifics

Melbourne runs four terminals and knowing which is which decides your whole connection. T2 is the international terminal and handles every international arrival and departure. T1 is Qantas domestic, T3 is Virgin Australia and Rex, T4 is the budget carriers. T2 and T3 share an arrivals concourse, while T1 and T4 are separate buildings reached on foot or by shuttle.
International-to-international is the straightforward case because both flights use T2, so a through-checked bag and a boarding pass means you stay airside. International-to-domestic is the one that eats time: immigration, baggage reclaim, customs and biosecurity all happen in T2, and Melbourne Airport suggests allowing 45 to 60 minutes from wheels-down to exiting at peak. Then you still have to reach T1, T3 or T4 and check in again. A free Terminal Transfer Bus links all four terminals around the clock every 10 to 15 minutes, but you catch it from the Ground Transport zone outside arrivals, which means it is landside — you have already cleared immigration by the time you are on it.
Australia's transit rules bind here exactly as they do at every Australian airport, and they are stricter than most travellers expect. Transit Without Visa covers roughly 67 nationalities including the UK, US, Canada, most of Europe, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and the UAE, but only if you arrive by air, have a confirmed onward ticket to a third country leaving within 8 hours, and never clear immigration for any reason. Collect a bag, switch terminals or check in for the next flight, and TWOV no longer applies. India is not on the TWOV list, so Indian passport holders need a visa even for a short airside connection.
Where TWOV does not cover you, the subclass 771 Transit visa is free, valid for up to 72 hours, and has to be arranged before you travel rather than on arrival.

Leaving MEL during a layover

Nobody leaves Melbourne Airport visa-free. Australia requires a visa or an ETA of every non-citizen even for a few hours in the city, and TWOV specifically does not permit leaving the transit area. UK, US, Canadian, Japanese, Singaporean and most EU passports can get an ETA or eVisitor online cheaply and quickly, and with one you can come and go freely — but it has to exist before you board, not when you land. New Zealand citizens enter under the Trans-Tasman arrangement. Without one arranged in advance, plan on staying airside. The city is about 30 minutes away one-way; as a rule of thumb you want 4+ hours before exiting is worth the queues, and you should be back through security 90 minutes before boarding.

Worth your hours in Melbourne

The laneways between Flinders Street and Bourke Street — Degraves Street, Centre Place, Hosier Lane — are the fastest way to feel like you have actually been to Melbourne, and they sit within a few minutes' walk of where SkyBus drops you at Southern Cross.
The free City Circle tram loops the CBD past Federation Square, the Old Treasury Building and Docklands, costs nothing, and requires no ticket or myki card, which makes it the obvious move for a short stop with a fixed return time.
The Queen Victoria Market is a short tram ride north of Southern Cross and works well for a couple of hours if your timing lands on an open day — check before you commit, as it closes Mondays and Wednesdays.

Staying airside instead

T2 is a proper international terminal with the usual duty-free, a reasonable spread of food, free Wi-Fi and charging, but it is not a destination airport in the Changi or Doha sense and there is little to do once you have walked it. Melbourne is a city worth leaving the airport for, which makes the visa question above the one that actually shapes your layover.
Australian biosecurity is enforced rather than nominal. If you clear immigration for any reason, declare every food item, plant product, wooden object and anything animal-derived on your Incoming Passenger Card. The fines are large and bags are screened.
Baggage storage is available in the T2 arrivals hall, which is genuinely useful if you have a long connection, a visa, and no desire to drag a cabin bag around the city.

Sleeping, showers and lounges at MEL

Sleep: There is no airside transit hotel at Melbourne, so a long overnight connection airside means the concourse. The on-site landside hotel and several others a short shuttle away are far better, but reaching any of them means clearing immigration, which means holding a visa. Showers: Shower access is through the lounges rather than as a standalone paid facility, so it depends on your airline status or a lounge pass. Do not assume you can pay for a shower on arrival the way you can at the big Asian and Gulf hubs.

Lounges: T2 carries the Qantas International Business and First lounges, along with airline lounges for the major carriers and pay-per-use options that accept Priority Pass. Overnight reality: Melbourne's international schedule clusters into the evening and early morning, so overnight connections are common and worth planning around. The 8-hour TWOV limit is the thing to check first: if your two international flights are more than 8 hours apart, TWOV stops covering you and you need a visa to be anywhere other than the transit area. With a visa the calculus is easy, because SkyBus runs from 4am to 1am and the city is 25 kilometres away. Without one, an overnight connection here is a long night in a terminal that is not built for it.

No. As of 2026 there is still no rail link to Melbourne Airport — the Melbourne Airport Rail project is not operational. This catches out a lot of people who assume a city of Melbourne's size has an airport train. Your options are SkyBus, taxi, rideshare or a public bus. SkyBus runs to Southern Cross Station from 4am to 1am, every 10 minutes at peak and every 15 outside it, taking 30 to 45 minutes. A taxi takes about 35 minutes and runs roughly $55 to $65. The public bus needs a myki card and takes around 70 minutes.
